Zestárlý biliárový šampion Eddie Felson už dávno vzdal svou hráčskou kariéru a věnuje se obchodu s alkoholem. Jednoho dne však narazí na talentovaného mladíka Vincenta, jenž v kulečníku exceluje. Podaří se mu přesvědčit Vincenta a jeho dívku Carmen, aby spolu začali vydělávat peníze v hazardní hře v maloměstských hernách. Cynický Eddie zároveň učí Vincenta, jak se ve hře zdokonalit a hlavně jak klamat tělem. Vincent je nucen učit se i pokoře, protože kvůli sázení je v jejich zájmu hru někdy prohrát. Vztah učitele a žáka nakonec přeroste v konkurenční boj dvou kulečníkových mistrů a především dvou svérázných osobností...
