Příběh začíná v okamžiku, kdy čerstvě vystudovaný skotský lékař Nicholas Garrigan odlétá do Ugandy. Krátce po svém příletu je přivolán na místo nehody – nový prezident Idi Amin naboural se svým Maserati do krávy. Garrigan situaci vyřeší a svou bezostyšnou přímostí si Amina získá. Amin, který byl už dříve posedlý skotskou historií a kulturou, si Garrigana ihned oblíbí a nabídne mu, aby se stal jeho osobním lékařem. Tuto nabídku mladý doktor nemůže odmítnout – a právě tady začíná jeho cesta do šokujícího zákulisí jedné z nejstrašnějších hrůzovlád v Africe...
