Příběh se točí kolem japonské legendy o samurajovi, který se postavil bratrům – démonům hromu a blesku, aby ochránil život své milované. Démony porazil a jejich moc se přenesla do “meče bouřek”. V soudobém Japonsku je profesor Sakai po otevření starodávného svitku posednut démony, kteří chtějí získat mocný meč a nabýt zpět hmotné podoby. Jenže dotyčný artefakt se řízením osudu dostane do rukou Hellboyovi, kterému nezbývá, než se vydat na strastiplnou cestu tajemnou, nebezpečnou krajinou plnou duchů, démonů a monster, aby zachránil náš svět před blížící se hrozbou… První animovaný snímek o démonovi s uřezanými rohy a kamennou pravačkou producentsky podpořil režisér Guillermo del Toro a k tvorbě přizval i původní herce, s kterými natočil film HELLBOY. Na příběhu se také podílel Mike Mignola, autor komiksové předlohy.
