Svět zachvátila hrůzná infekce, virus nemoci šílených krav zmutoval a začal se ohromující rychlostí šířit mezi lidmi. Z většiny obyvatel planety Země se po dvou měsících od propuknutí epidemie stali zombie. Mladík, přezdívaný Columbus, přežívá jen díky tomu, že dodržuje přísná pravidla, která si sám stanovil. Snaží se dostat z Texasu domů do Ohia. Cestou narazí na svérázného a neohroženého zabijáka zombie, který má namířeno do Tallahassee. Společně projíždějí zpustošenou a liduprázdnou zemí a snaží se přijít na to, jestli je vůbec možné zhoubu lidstva přežít. Setkávají se také s půvabnou Wichitou a její mladší sestrou Little Rock. Po několika pokusech obou dívek mladíky obelstít a okrást uzavřou dohodu, že dál budou cestovat společně. Jako jedni z mála přeživších by měli držet při sobě a krýt si záda.
