Bishop (Tupac Shakur), Q (Omar Epps), Raheem (Khalil Kain) a Steel (Jermaine Hopkins) jsou čtyři přátelé vyrůstající v Harlemu. Žijí hip-hopem, chodí pravidelně za školu a tráví své dny hraním videoher a kradením gramofonových desek. Jsou den co den štváni policií nebo místním gangem, který vede Radames (Vincent Laresca). Jednoho dne si řeknou dost a rozhodnou se, že si ve čtvrti konečně sjednají respekt. Jdou a vyloupí místní obchod, což má být jakýsi test odvahy a sounáležitosti – tam se ale stane něco s čím původně nepočítali. Bishop se snaží věci urovnat a jde dál za vytyčeným cílem, jeho parťáci jsou ale vystrašení a chtějí z toho vycouvat, Bishopovi se to nelíbí a začne jim vyhrožovat.
