Im Jahr 1727 wird ein Araberhengst geboren, der den Namen Sham ("Sonne") erhält und dem Sultan von Tunis zusammen mit dem stummen Waisenjungen Agba zum Geschenk gemacht wird. Sham trägt ein Glücks- und ein Unglücksmal und bringt seinen Besitzern ein wechselhaftes Schicksal. Auf dem Weg zum französischen König, wird Sham von verdorbenem Futter krank und muß niedere Dienste verrichten. Selbst als ein pferdebegeisterter Engländer die verborgenen Qualitäten des mittlerweile von einem Holzhändler gequälten Rassepferdes erkennt, wendet sich das Schicksal noch lange nicht zum Guten. Dennoch wird Sham am Ende zum Stammvater der berühmten Godolphin-Zucht, aus der bis heute unzählige Rennpferde hervorgegangen sind.
