April 1942. Im Atlantik tobt der U-Boot-Krieg. Lieutenant Commander Mike Dahlgren wird zusammen mit seinem ersten Offizier Lieutenant Andrew Tyler und einer Handvoll unerschrockener junger Soldaten auf eine streng geheime, gefährliche Mission geschickt. Sie sollen aus dem deutschen U-Boot U-571 eine “Enigma” holen – die technisch hoch entwickelte Verschlüsselungs-Maschine der Deutschen. Nur mit diesem Gerät wären die Alliierten in der Lage, die Funksprüche der deutschen Gegner zu entschlüsseln und dem U-Boot-Krieg ein Ende zu setzen. Doch die Mission verläuft anders als erwartet. Als die Männer an Bord der U-571 sind und die Enigma in ihre Gewalt gebracht haben, wird ihr eigenes Schiff versenkt. Verzweifelt versuchen sie, die deutschsprachigen Instrumente und Handbücher zu entziffern, um das Boot in Fahrt zu bekommen. Doch die Alliierten haben die Jagd auf den vermeintlichen Feind U-571 längst eröffnet.
