Abbie Hoffman-t az 1968-as chicagói megmozdulások egyik fő szervezőjét perbe fogták hét társával együtt (a nyolcadik, az amerikai fekete polgárjogi mozgalom radikális szárnyához, a Fekete Párducokhoz tartozó Bobby Seale ügyét külön kezelték), végül azonban a per – hála a vádlottaknak és illusztris tanúiknak, köztük Allen Ginsbergnek és Norman Mailernek – köznevetségbe fulladt, és a „heteket” felmentették.
