Was geht in Kriminellen vor? Für Dr. Clitterhouse gibt es nur eine Methode, das herauszufinden: Um die physische und mentale Verfassung von Gesetzesbrechern zu erforschen, wird er selbst Mitglied einer Bande von Juwelendieben. "Erstaunlich, wirklich erstaunlich", resümiert der Doktor am Ende seiner kriminellen Laufbahn und beschreibt damit auch sehr gut diese ebenso ausgelassene wie bleihaltige Komödie. Die Titelrolle übernimmt Edward G. Robinson, der damit seinem Leinwandgangster-Image eine clever-ironische Variante hinzufügt. Mit dabei ist zudem Claire Trevor als ausgebuffte Königin der Unterwelt. Und Humphrey Bogart spielt den kaltblütigen Rocks Valentine, den der Doktor als "Musterbeispiel reiner Boshaftigkeit" bezeichnet.
