Nachdem er im Alleingang das Atomraketenprogramm der Nazis im Keim erstickte und dabei Außerirdische als deren Kollaborateure enttarnte, fällt Superheld Captain America in eine sechzigjährige Froststarre. Aus der befreien ihn nun nicht ohne Hintergedanken Forscher in Diensten des Generals Fury, seines Zeichens Chef des supergeheimen S.H.I.E.L.D.-Projekts. Denn wieder droht der Welt eine unermessliche Gefahr. Reptilienartige Aliens greifen nach der Eroberung des Planeten Erde. Und Nick Fury sieht die einzige Möglichkeit dies zu verhindern, indem er die größten Superhelden der Welt zusammenbringt und sie gegen die Aliens antreten lässt. Da darf Captain America, der als Teamleader auserkoren wurde, natürlich nicht fehlen. Aber so leicht, wie es auf den ersten Blick aussieht, ist das Zusammenspiel der Avengers nicht, pflegen doch einige gehörige Macken und ihre übergroßen Egos.
