Kuba, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts: Mittels einer Zeitungsanzeige lernt Julia Russel, den reichen Kaffeeplantagen-Besitzer Louis Vargas kennen. Dieser sucht eine Frau, die ihn heiratet, damit seine gesellschaftliche Stellung gefestigt wird. Louis verliebt sich jedoch in Julia und heiratet sie kurze Zeit später.
