James Lavelle ist ein gutherziger Priester in einer irischen Kleinstadt, der von seiner Gemeinde nicht besonders gut behandelt wird. Im Beichtstuhl muss er sich so einiges anhören. Während einer Beichte wird der Geistliche plötzlich mit dem Tode bedroht: Eine ihm fremde Person beichtet ihm, dass er von einem katholischen Kollegen vergewaltigt wurde und nun als Rache an dem bereits verschiedenen Priester einen moralisch integren Gottesdiener umbringen möchte. Von nun an hat Lavelle eine Woche Zeit, sein Leben in Ordnung zu bringen, dann will ihn der Mann töten. Gebunden an das Beichtgeheimnis beschließt Lavelle, sich selbst auf die Suche nach seinem zukünftigen Mörder zu machen und ihn von der Güte Gottes zu überzeugen. Doch das ist gar nicht so einfach in einem Ort, in dem es nur so von skurrilen und unchristlichen Einwohnern wimmelt...
