Angesiedelt ist die Filmhandlung in Frankreich, im Jahre 1858, als sich in der Normandie Widerstand gegen die Politik Louis Napoleon's (David Bond) regt. Christianne (Paula Corday), Tochter des Maquis de Montableau (Robert Warwick) unterstützt die Rebellen. Zur Finanzierung soll ihr Erbe "Das Schwert von Monte Christo" dienen, dessen Inschrift den Weg zu einem Schatz verrät. Als der machthungrige Minister LARoche (Berry Kroeger) Kenntnis von der Existenz dieses Schwertes erlangt, versucht er mit allen Mitteln sich in den Besitz des Schwertes zu bringen. Dabei tritt ein unerwarteter Gegner auf den Plan, ein maskierter Reiter, dem selbst Capitain Renault (George Montgomery), ein schmucker Dragoner und Schürzenjäger im ersten Moment nicht gewachsen scheint. Plötzlich überschlagen sich die Ereignisse und der Capitain muß sich für eine Seite entscheiden.
