Im Indianerreservat wird eine Leiche gefunden, der nach einem altem indianischem Ritual an Händen und Füssen die Haut abgezogen wurde. Der Polizist der "Navajo Tribal Police" Jim Chee wird dazu verdonnert Nachts die heilige Windmühle im Gebiet der Hopi-Indianer zu bewachen. Dabei beobachtet er, wie ein Kleinflugzeug nahe seinem Wachposten abstürzt. Chee begibt sich an den Absturzort und muss mit ansehen, wie ein Auto vom Absturzort flüchtet. Am Absturzort findet Chee einen Sterbenden und ein weiteres Opfer, das erschossen wurde. Das Halbblut Jim Chee wird mit dem Fall betraut. Mit indianischer Schläue und seinem Gespür für Mystik und Aberglaube untersucht er beide, bisher als unabhängig angesehene, Verbrechen und er findet einen fast perfekt konstruierten Mord.
