England 1918. Charles Rainier hat als Major im Krieg eine schwere Amnesie erlitten und kann sich nicht mehr an seine Herkunft erinnern. In einem Pflegeheim hofft er vergebens darauf, dass ihn seine Verwandten entdecken und abholen. Während der Jubelfeiern zum Kriegsende gelingt es Charles, aus dem Heim zu entkommen. In einer Kneipe wird die Revuetänzerin Paula Ridgeway auf den scheuen und verloren wirkenden Charles aufmerksam und verliebt sich in ihn. Charles heiratet sie schließlich und sie bekommen einen Sohn. Eines Tages wird Charles jedoch auf einer Reise nach Liverpool von einem Auto angefahren. Durch den Unfallschock sind die drei glücklichen Jahre mit Paula plötzlich wie ausradiert. Paula lässt sich unter falschem Namen als seine Privatsekretärin anstellen. Charles erliegt indes fast dem Liebeswerben der jungen Kitty.
