Unzufrieden mit ihrem Leben als Fabrikarbeiterin flieht die junge Marian Martin bei der ersten Gelegenheit aus ihrer kleinen Heimatstadt - just als sie den reichen Geschäftsmann Wally Stuart kennenlernt. Sie folgt ihm gegen den Widerstand ihrer Mutter und ihres bisherigen Arbeiterfreundes Al Manning nach New York, wo sie nicht nur lernt, wie man schnell und erfolgreich wohlhabende Männer auf sich aufmerksam zu machen, sondern auch den geschiedenen Anwalt Mark Whitney lieben lernt. Drei Jahre haben die beiden eine Liebesbeziehung, die aber "heiß" zu werden droht, als Mark in der Politik Karriere machen kann. Auch Al, inzwischen wohlhabend, hat Marian noch nicht aufgegeben und die junge Frau muß sich nun entscheiden, ob sie bereit ist, für den Mann ihres Lebens ein Opfer zu bringen...
