Beschreibung

Nach seiner Rückkehr aus China, wo er bis zum Tod seines Vaters in dessen Geschäft gearbeitet hatte, trifft der vierzigjährige Arthur Clennam im Haus seiner puritanischen Mutter die zwanzigjährige, wegen ihrer zierlichen Figur Little Dorrit genannte Amy Dorrit, die dort Näharbeiten verrichtet. Amys Familie lebt seit Jahren im Londoner Schuldgefängnis Marshalsea - der Vater ist dessen ältester Bewohner, Amy wurde dort geboren. Arthur unterstützt die Dorrits und erfährt mehr über das "Circumlocation Office". Diese Behörde wird von der Familie Barnacle beherrscht, die alles daran setzt, den Fortschritt im Land zu verhindern. Arthur setzt sich hier für seinen Geschäftspartner Doyce ein, der seit Jahren versucht, ein Patent anzumelden. Nachdem die Dorrits endlich aus dem Schuldgefängnis freigekommen sind, verliert Arthur durch den Schwindel des Spekulanten Merdle sein Vermögen und landet selbst in Marshalsea.
