Η σειρά διαδραματίζεται στην αίθουσα επειγόντων περιστατικών σ΄ ένα μεγάλο νοσοκομείο του Σικάγο. Εκεί που η ένταση και το άγχος ανεβαίνουν κατακόρυφα παρακολουθούμε τις αγωνιώδεις προσπάθειες των γιατρών να σώσουν τη ζωή των ασθενών τους. Οι αποφάσεις παίρνονται σε κλάσματα δευτερολέπτων και είναι αποφάσεις ζωής ή θανάτου. Δουλεύουν με αυταπάρνηση αν και αμείβονται ανεπαρκώς και καθημερινά ένας είναι ο στόχος τους: η ζωή να είναι αυτή που θα επικρατήσει στη δύσκολη μάχη με το θάνατο. Χαρά και λύπη εναλλάσσονται και οι ισορροπίες δεν είναι πάντα εύκολο να κρατηθούν. Οι σκηνές του νοσοκομείου αποδίδονται με ρεαλιστικό τρόπο και αυτή είναι η επιτυχία και η διαφορά της συγκεκριμένης σειράς από άλλες που εκτυλίσσονται σε παρόμοιους χώρους
