Samedi 15 août 1998, ville d'Omagh en Irlande du Nord. A 15h10, lorsque la bombe de 250 kg explose dans le quartier commerçant de Market Street, elle tue 29 personnes et en blesse plus de 250 autres. Cet attentat, le plus meurtrier du conflit nord-irlandais, est revendiqué par le Real IRA, groupe dissident de l'Armée Républicaine Irlandaise. Un mois plus tard, en dépit des engagements solennels de Londres et de Dublin, les responsables de l'attentat continuent à échapper aux policiers des deux Irlandes. Certaines sources affirment que la police connaît l'identité des coupables, mais ne les attrapera jamais, faute d'éléments à charge. En colère, les habitants d'Omagh décident de constituer une association d'aide aux victimes.
