Peter and Katherine Witner are Southern California super-yuppies with great jobs but no center to their lives. When they both lose their jobs and begin marital infidelities, their solution is to start their own business together. In order to find meaning to their empty lives, they follow various New Age gurus and other such groups. Eventually, they hit rock bottom and have to make some hard decisions.

Ausgerechnet in dem Augenblick, als ein Mann seinen lukrativen Job kündigt, verliert seine Frau auch ihren, so daß die Ehepartner unvermittelt vor einem finanziellen Problem stehen. Die wirtschaftliche Krise offenbart den ruinösen Zustand ihrer Ehe. Versuche, in anderen Bereichen Fuß zu fassen, erweisen sich als Flops. Am Ende scheint der Doppelselbstmord die einzige Lösung. Ein kammerspielartig entwickeltes Melodram, mit schwarzem Humor inszeniert, das konsequent schildert, wie Menschen ihre geistige und emotionale Leere im Konsumrausch zu vergessen versuchen. Die Kälte der Inszenierung entspricht der Scheinwelt der Oberflächenreize, verweigert aber zugleich auch menschliche Dimensionen.
