Paris 1930. Paul has only ever had one and the same horizon: the high walls of the orphanage, an austere building in the Parisian working class suburbs. Entrusted to a joyful country woman, Célestine, and her husband, Borel, the rather stiff gamekeeper of a vast estate in Sologne, the city child, recalcitrant and stubborn, arrives in a mysterious and disturbing world, that of a sovereign and wild region. The huge forest, misty ponds, heaths, and fields all belong to the Count de la Fresnaye, an elderly taciturn man who lives alone in his manor.

Paris 1930. Paul n’a toujours eu qu’un seul et même horizon: les hauts murs de l’orphelinat, sévère bâtisse de la banlieue ouvrière parisienne. Confié à une joyeuse dame de la campagne, Célestine et à son mari, Borel, le garde-chasse un peu raide d’un vaste domaine en Sologne, l’enfant des villes, récalcitrant et buté, arrive dans un monde mystérieux et inquiétant, celui d’une région souveraine et sauvage. L’immense forêt, les étangs embrumés, les landes et les champs, tout ici appartient au Comte de la Fresnaye, un veuf taciturne qui vit solitaire dans son manoir. Le Comte tolère les braconniers sur le domaine, mais Borel les traque sans relâche et s’acharne sur le plus rusé et insaisissable d’entre eux, Totoche. Au cœur de la féérique Sologne, aux côtés du braconnier, grand amoureux de la nature, Paul va faire l’apprentissage de la vie mais aussi celui de la forêt et de ses secrets. Un secret encore plus lourd pèse sur le domaine, car Paul n’est pas venu là par hasard …

Życie Paula od początku ograniczone było wysokimi murami sierocińca – surowego budynku, mieszczącego się na robotniczych przedmieściach Paryża. W jego życiu dominowały strach i melancholia. Los chłopca odmienia się, gdy trafia pod opiekę Célestine i Borela, mieszkających na pełnych zielonych lasów, mglistych ziem i rozległych pól terenach należących do Hrabiego de la Fresnaye. Na miejscu poznaje ekscentrycznego kłusownika Totoche’a, od którego uczy się życia, poznaje sekrety pobliskich lasów, a także odkrywa, że jego przybycie do regionu Sologne nie było przypadkowe.

Von Célestine jedoch bekommt er die Freiheit, sich im angrenzenden Wald und der Umgebung aufzuhalten, solange er verspricht sich zu benehmen. Und gleich auf seinem ersten Spaziergang trifft er auf Totoche, der „Wilderer“, wie ihn Borel abschätzig nennt und vor dem er Paul gewarnt hat. Aber Paul stellt schnell fest, dass Totoche ein überaus liebenswürdiger Kerl ist, von dem er noch jede Menge lernen kann.
