Homer Flagg (Lewis) is a railroad worker in the small town of Desert Hole, New Mexico. One day he finds an abandoned automobile at an old atomic proving ground. His doctor and best friend, Steve Harris (Martin), diagnoses him with radiation poisoning and gives Homer three weeks to live. A reporter for a New York newspaper, hears of Homer's plight and convinces her editor, to provide an all-expenses paid trip to New York.

Pretty Wally Cooper, una giornalista del New York Chronicle, convince il suo editore a farle fare una serie di articoli su Homer Flagg, un grezzo capostazione del Nuovo Messico creduto moribondo per un avvelenamento radioattivo. Homer scopre grazie al suo dottore però che la sua diagnosi era sbagliata e che è in perfetta salute. Ciò non impedisce loro di accettare da Wally un viaggio tutto pagato a New York. Tutti a New York provano compassione per Homer. Questo ed il dottore intanto tentano di portare avanti la messinscena e di non far scoprire la verità.
