Im Jahr 2018. Hubschrauber kreisen über fast menschenleeren Straßen. Über riesige Bildschirme lockt die Organisation "Lifecorps" in Not geratene Menschen mit dem Angebot: 300.000 Dollar sofort und in bar - allerdings überlassen sie damit "Lifecorps" nach Ablauf eines Jahres ihre Körper zu medizinischen Zwecken. Gabriel hat keine andere Wahl. Wenn er seinen kleinen Sohn Bobby retten will, muß er diesen makaberen Vertrag abschließen. Das lebensnotwendige Serum ist unerschwinglich teuer und "Lifecorps", zynischerweise ebenfalls Lieferant des Mittels, kennt kein Mitleid. Aber Gabriels Opfer kommt zu spät. Zurück in der Klinik erfährt er, daß Bobby angeblich an dem Virus gestorben ist. Gebriel ahnt nicht, daß Bobby absichtlich infiziert wurde. Bei ihm wurde eine Imunität festgestellt, die "Lifecorps" sich zunutze machen will. Als Gabriel außer sich vor Zorn das Geld zurückgeben will, wird er des Vertragsbruchs beschuldigt. "Lifecorps" hetzt Suchkommandos auf ihn.

2018-at írunk. Tíz évvel korábban a Legfelsőbb Bíróság hatályon kívül helyezte az öngyilkosság tiltását kimondó törvényt. Az emberi szervekkel kereskedő cégek legálisan működhetnek, óriási profitot termelve. A Lifecorps a legnagyobb és ők kínálják a legjobb feltételeket. Jim fia kórházban fekszik, halálos beteg. Nem tudja előteremteni másképp a gyógyításához szükséges pénzt, ezért vállalja az ördögi szerződést. Az aláírás után ki akarja fizetni az orvosokat, de megtudja, hogy fia időközben meghalt. Jim semmisnek tekinti a szerződést, a Lifecorps viszont nem.
