Tras un peligroso accidente, Benedetto es trasladado a una clínica donde debe ser sometido a una operación de urgencia. Durante la larga y complicada intervención Benedetto comienza a recordar su vida desde que era un pequeño huérfano encomendado a la tutela de su tía, una pueblerina de no muy limpias costumbres.
