Mike Burden est un jeune homme taciturne qui gravit les échelons du Ku Klux Klan dans une petite ville de Caroline du Sud, en 1996. Orphelin depuis son enfance, il est farouchement loyal envers Tom Griffin, le chef local du Klan, un homme toxique. Mais Burden change de sentiments quand il tombe amoureux de Judy, une mère célibataire qui remue sa conscience sociale. Sa rupture violente avec le Klan le précipite dans les bras ouverts du révérend Kennedy, un prédicateur idéaliste afro-américain, qui lui offre sécurité et le guide vers la rédemption.
