Horace McNickle (Edward Asner) est un malfaiteur deux fois au service de prison pour contrefaçon. La semaine avant Noël, il échappe à la prison déguisé en Père Noël en raison de son inquiétante étrangeté resemblence à Saint-Nick résultant de sa longue barbe blanche et caractéristiques corpulent. McNickle se cache de la police dans un quartier de banlieue à proximité où il se lie d'amitié et aidé par deux enfants locaux qui pensent qu'il est le vrai Père Noël. McNickle profite des enfants ness naïfs pour l'aider à récupérer son argent contrefait caché quelque part dans un magasin local alors qu'il développe des sentiments bienveillants pour ses deux con victimes qui lui font comprendre lentement la vraie nature de Noël.
