Big Jim McLain et son adjoint Mal Baxter supportent mal que la Constitution américaine permette à des communistes de se promener librement aux Etats-Unis. Ces agents spéciaux du Comité des Activités anti-américaines sont chargés d'enquêter sur une cellule communiste à Honolulu. A l'aéroport, ils passent un accord avec un journaliste local, Phil Briggs, qui accepte de les aider en échange de la primeur des informations.
