En dépit de son grade élevé, le lieutenant colonel Michael Strobl, du Corps des Marines des Etats-Unis, se porte volontaire pour accompagner le corps d'un jeune soldat de dix-neuf ans, Chance Phelps, jusqu'à sa dernière demeure, dans sa ville natale de Dubois, au Wyoming.
