Au Hampden Cross General Hospital, en banlieue londonienne, l'atrabilaire et compassé chef de service sir Lancelot Spratt, souffrant de contusions à la suite d'une malencontreuse chute, devient le patient d'Iris Marchant, une kinésithérapeute maison.
