Venu dans une petite ville de l'Ouest, à la demande de son frère, le pasteur local, un US Marshall apprend qu'il est décédé " accidentellement" dans l'incendie de son église. Il constate également que les habitants sont brimés, les commerçants rackettés, par des hommes de main d'un potentat local. Découvrant ensuite que ce baron entretient une milice d'ex-confédérés, il contacte la Cavalerie stationnée à proximité de la ville mais se heurte à l'indifférence de son Capitaine, qui attend les ordres de Washington.Se rendant enfin dans une mine abandonnée sur les indications d'une carte codée par son défunt frère, il y trouve un important stock d'armes, munitions et de l'or...
