Des fouilles archéologiques ont été entreprises dans un vieux quartier de Jérusalem par le professeur Sharon Golban. Après plusieurs jours de recherche, un mystérieux tombeau est mis à jour. Dans celui-ci, un squelette gît, et d'après les marques décelées sur les poignets et les pieds du cadavre, les datations exécutées au carbone 14 ainsi que les objets retrouvés aux côtés de la victime, il semblerait que cet homme fut crucifié il y a deux mille ans, sous l'époque de Ponce Pilate… Le professeur Matt Guttiérez est alors dépêché en urgence sur le lieu des fouilles par le Vatican afin de résoudre cette découverte jusqu'alors gardée secrète.
