Durant la dynastie des Song du Nord (XIIème siècle), dans les montagnes de Liang Shan, un groupe de courageux, patriotiques chevaliers composés de hors-la-loi, d'insoumis, s'unit pour s'opposer à la dictature tyrannique des autorités impériales. Leur première action consiste à infiltrer deux de leurs meilleurs hommes, Wu yung, Li Kuei, afin de gagner la confiance du richissime Lu Chun-i , un proche de Shih Wen-Kung, afin de créer la discorde entre ces deux hommes de pouvoir. Cependant, Lu Chun-i ne tarde pas à découvrir la véritable identité de ces deux hommes, et, en apprenant qu'ils sont envoyés par l'honorable Sung Chiang, un homme qu'il respecte, il renonce à les faire arrêter. Le temps est venu de choisir son camp.
