Barry Storm assiste au meurtre d’un prospecteur d’or qu’il suivait au milieu de la région désertique et montagneuse de Superstition Mountain en Arizona ; il pensait que ce dernier allait le mener à la mine perdue de son grand-père. Plutôt que de continuer à la chercher seul, il rentre faire part au shérif local de sa découverte du cadavre. On lui rappelle alors la légende qui court sur ce gisement d’or découvert par des espagnols au siècle dernier. Ils n’eurent pas l’occasion d’en profiter puisque tous décimés par les Apaches qui cachèrent le filon en bouchant l’entrée de la mine. Ce trésor fut néanmoins quelques années plus tard retrouvé par un aventurier d’origine allemande sans foi ni loi, Jacob Walz. C’était aux alentours de 1870...
