Kate Wilson, avocate dans un grand cabinet de San Francisco, reçoit un appel de son ancien fiancé, David Walker, qui vit toujours dans leur ville natale, Point Verde. Ce dernier est accusé d'avoir assassiné sa femme et lui demande de le défendre. En froid avec son père, Kate hésite et finit par se rendre à Point Verde. Elle prend connaissance du dossier et repère quelques failles. Elle décide donc de défendre David et se met à dos toute la ville, y compris son père, furieux qu'elle soit revenue pour le jeune homme. Avec l'aide de son détective privé et de son expert scientifique, Kate va réussir à mettre à jour un autre coupable et à semer le doute. On apprend que la victime avait un amant et allait demander le divorce. Mais quelle vérité se cache derrière tout cela ?
