Alors que la Seconde Guerre mondiale fait rage, Henry et Anne, un couple d'Autrichiens exilés à Londres, tente d'échapper aux terribles bombardements de l'aviation allemande. Afin de rejoindre un navire qui leur permettra de quitter l'Europe le plus rapidement possible, ils font route vers le port le plus proche. Mais les amants, dont la voiture est détruite par une énorme explosion, ne parviendront jamais à terminer leur trajet. C'est alors, qu'ils se retrouvent, contre toute attente, à bord d'un luxueux navire, en compagnie d'autres passagers aussi surpris qu'eux. Henry et Anne comprennent bientôt qu'ils sont tous victimes du raid aérien mené par les forces allemandes...
