Embarqué sur le « Marco Polo » quittant San Francisco à destination de Shanghai, M. Moto a pour voisin de cabine Bob Hitchings, le fils du propriétaire de la compagnie de navigation, porteur d'une lettre de son père destinée à Joseph Wilkie, son représentant en Chine. Le paquebot fait escale à Honolulu, où embarque la jolie Gloria Danton, à laquelle Hitchings fait immédiatement une cour pressante. Surprenant le steward Carson qui fouille dans la cabine de son compagnon de voyage, Moto le précipite par-dessus bord. Dès l'arrivée à Shanghai, Gloria disparaît, au grand désarroi de Bob, qui remet à Wilkie la lettre de son père contenant une simple feuille blanche. En réalité, la lettre a été subtilisée par Moto qui, en coordination avec la police chinoise, est sur les traces d'un gang de trafiquants de diamants et de drogue.
