Toute sa vie, Andrew Crocker-Harris a enseigné les lettres classiques dans un très chic établissement anglais, l'Abbey College. Dur et intransigeant, il n'est aimé ni des étudiants, ni de ses collègues. Mis à la retraite forcée par le recteur Frobisher, sous prétexte d'ennuis de santé, Crocker-Harris tente une dernière fois d'établir le contact avec ses élèves, dont il ignore qu'ils l'ont surnommé «le Hitler de la cinquième». Son échec est patent, hormis auprès d'un jeune étudiant, fin et sensible, Taplow. Pendant ce temps, Laura, sa femme, se désole.
