Zurich, 1938. Willie, une jeune chanteuse de cabaret allemande, s'éprend de Robert, un musicien juif. Le père du jeune homme, David Mendelsson, dirige une organisation juive clandestine d'aide aux réfugiés. Il voit d'un mauvais œil la liaison de Robert et Willie. Le jeune musicien convoie régulièrement des fonds en Allemagne. Sur l'insistance de Willie, il accepte un jour de la laisser l'accompagner. Le père de Robert, trouvant là l'occasion de séparer les deux amants, fait retenir la chanteuse en Allemagne. Lorsque la guerre éclate, Willie, désemparée, se place sous la protection de Henkel, un officier SS qui lui fait enregistrer la chanson « Lili Marleen ». Le succès est immédiat. Willie devient une véritable star, parrainée par le ministère de la Culture du IIIe Reich. Elle rêve toutefois de retrouver Robert…
