En pleine guerre froide, l'agent secret britannique Alec Leamas est envoyé en Allemagne de l'Est. Pour passer le rideau de fer en toute discrétion, l'espion feint d'avoir été renvoyé par l'Intelligence Service. Se présentant comme un alcoolique dépressif, il parvient à se faire embaucher dans une bibliothèque. Là, il fait la connaissance d'une jeune communiste, Nancy Perry. Après un séjour en prison, il est contacté par un agent des services est-allemands. Sa mission consiste à poser une souricière afin de confondre un certain Mundt, haut gradé de l'espionnage est-allemand, en apportant des preuves de sa trahison à Fiedler, son adjoint. De Hollande, Leamas parvient à passer à l'Est, où Fiedler le fait arrêter pour témoigner au procès de Mundt. Nancy Perry est aussi appelée à la barre, où elle détruit les arguments de Leamas et Fiedler...
