Le mondain Anatol Spencer, trouvant sa relation avec sa femme Vivian terne, part à la recherche d'excitation. Après avoir croisé la vieille flamme Emilie Dixon dans une boîte de nuit, Anatol promet de la «sauver» de son style de vie citadin sans âme, ce que le souteneur théâtral lubrique Gordon Bronson a permis. Anatol convainc Emilie de se débarrasser des bijoux que Bronson lui a donnés, mais refuse à son tour d'abandonner sa femme car Emilie est tombée amoureuse de lui).
