Julian Berniers revient de l'Illinois avec sa jeune épouse Lily Prine dans sa famille à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Ses sœurs célibataires Carrie et Anna accueillent le couple, qui arrive avec des cadeaux coûteux. Les sœurs espèrent que Julian les aidera financièrement, et il leur dit que même si son usine rentable a fermé ses portes, il a réussi à économiser de l'argent.
