Au Festival de Cannes, Veronica, mannequin, se laisse séduire par une jolie jeune femme, Laura. Celle-ci ne cherche en fait qu'à voler les bijoux de Veronica avec l'aide de son complice, Black Tie. Mais le vol tourne mal et, tandis que Black Tie est arrêté par la police, Laura s'enfuit à Paris. Dans une église, un vieux couple prend Laura pour la femme de son fils décédé, Lily. Ils l'emmènent chez eux. Laura prend un bain quand apparaît la vraie Lily, son sosie. Celle-ci se suicide et Laura décide d'usurper son identité puis embarque pour les États-Unis. Elle y épouse un riche diplomate. Sept ans plus tard, son mari est nommé ambassadeur à Paris…
