Berlin 1955-ben, a hidegháború közepén. A négy részre szakított német fővárosban árgus szemekkel figyelik egymást az ellenfelek. Ide vezénylik Leonardot, a fiatal angol mérnököt, aki a lehallgatások specialistája. A leleményes amerikaiak ugyanis megcsapolták a szovjet főhadiszállás telefonvonalait, egyszerűen alagutat fúrtak a kábelekhez. A számára szokatlan világban Leonard egy helyi férjes asszony személyében talál kapaszkodót. Maria társasága egyre fontosabb lesz a számára.
