Laurie a juste seize ans lorsqu'elle rencontre Bruce Kellogg, divorcé et père de deux enfants, dans un café. La jeune et innocente jeune fille se laisse impressionner par cet être imposant. Lorsque sa mère et son beau-père quittent le pays, Bruce s'arrange pour que Laurie reste en 'l'achetant' cinq cent dollars. Laurie est amoureuse et nage dans le bonheur. Mais Bruce est très possessif et exigeant et devient agressif.
