Parigi, 1910. Madame Adelaide, una ricca, eccentrica e anziana signora, ex stella del firmamento lirico, decide di fare testamento e nomina eredi dei suoi ingenti beni i suoi quattro Aristogatti: mamma Duchessa e i cuccioli Minou, Bizet e Matisse. Madame Adelaide è rimasta sola al mondo e i quattro gatti sono i suoi affetti più grandi. A margine di questa "famiglia" c'è il maggiordomo Edgar, che sarà erede alla morte degli Aristogatti. Ma l'uomo, ansioso di mettere subito le mani sulle ricchezze della signora, decide di sbarazzarsi dei concorrenti a quattro zampe. Una notte di temporale li rapisce, ma li perde per strada durante l'incontro poco piacevole con due cani randagi. Persi per le insidiose vie di una città che non conoscono, la raffinata Duchessa e i suoi vispi cuccioli provano a tornare a casa, con l'aiuto dell'aitante Romeo, un gatto vagabondo, gigione dal cuore d'oro, incontrato per caso.
