Inizio del ventesimo secolo - Arabia. Sotto il sole spietato del deserto, due sultani si incontrano faccia a faccia. Tutto attorno, sul campo di battaglia, i corpi dei loro combattenti. Il vincitore Nesib, emiro di Hobeika (Antonio Banderas), detta le condizioni di pace al suo rivale Amar, sultano di Salmaah (Mark Strong). Nessuno potrà mai più reclamare i diritti della cosiddetta terra di nessuno, denominata "La Striscia Gialla". Secondo il costume tribale Nesib "tiene in ostaggio", adottandoli, i due figli maschi di Amar, Saleeh (Akin Gazi) e Auda (Tahar Rahim) a garanzia del trattato. Diversi anni dopo: Saleeh è un guerriero ansioso di fuggire dalla gabbia dorata e tornare nella terra del padre, mentre ad Auda interessano solo i libri e la ricerca della conoscenza. Un giorno il padre adottivo, Nesib, riceve la visita di un petroliere texano (Corey Johnson), che lo informa: il suo territorio è benedetto dal petrolio.
