Seconda guerra mondiale: Kurt Gerstein, un chimico ufficiale delle SS realmente esistito, scopre che lo Zyclon B, da lui realizzato per le disinfestazioni, viene utilizzato per eliminare gli ebrei. Sconvolto da questa rivelazione ed essendo profondamente religioso cerca un contatto negli ambienti della Chiesa Cattolica perché lo sterminio venga fermato. Ma Pio XII, per salvare i cattolici di Austria e Germania, deciderà di tacere.
