Studente di un'esclusiva high school della East Coast americana, Robert è un adolescente che vive isolato e dissociato dal mondo inquieto e falsamente perbenista che lo circonda. Condivide la stanza con Dave, spacciatore di droghe e alcol del liceo, e con un computer con il quale trascorre la maggior parte del suo tempo a scaricare tutti i brevi filmati postati in rete. L'interesse per il mondo dei video lo porta a iscriversi al corso di audiovisivi, dove viene incaricato di realizzare un progetto sulla scuola. Mentre si trova da solo a filmare uno dei corridoi dell'edificio, riprende le due ragazze più popolari dell'istituto in preda ad un'emorragia causata da una sniffata di cocaina contaminata con veleno per topi.
