Joshua Shapira, killer di professione, torna a Little Odessa, quartiere di immigrati russi a Brighton Beach, Long Island, dove è nato, per un "lavoretto pulito". Suo padre gli vieta di mettere piede in casa, dove sua madre è morente e suo fratello minore, Reuben, stravede per lui. Joshua vuole compiere il lavoro quella notte, ma suo padre lo "vende" al boss del quartiere. Pagheranno le sole persone che ama. Opera prima del regista James Gray, il film si avvale di un'ottimo Tim Roth nel ruolo del protagonista e di grossi nomi (Schell, Redgrave) in quelli minori. Ma ripropone atmosfere, personaggi e schemi già noti, con scarsa originalità.
