Racconta la storia di tre donne della stessa famiglia newyorkese, appartenenti a tre generazioni differenti e di come la trasformazione di una di loro influisca sulle altre. Ray (Elle Fanning) è una ragazza adolescente che sente il desiderio di diventare un ragazzo. Sua madre single, Maggie (Naomi Watts), deve quindi rintracciare il padre biologico per ottenere il consenso legale per il cambiamento.
